The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as a common guideline
All companies under JPS Marselis work purposefully with four of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These four goals have been carefully selected based on the areas where we believe our companies have the greatest opportunity to make a difference. Although the companies operate in very different areas, the global goals are one of the common threads that the employees have in common across industries. Together with the UN’s Global Compact, the SDGs are thereby a guideline for our companies, so they know how to act in relation to the world around us.
It is a priority for our companies to work with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Through courses and further training, we ensure that employees are always aware of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the direction in which we work. Both because the goals contribute to a more sustainable future and because it is our belief that they help our companies become more successful in the long term. By creating sustainable business models and providing products and services that are responsibly produced, companies can attract and retain customers who are also committed to a more sustainable future.
Our companies work with these four goals:
A few examples
As all companies continuously work with the goals, they introduce and test new measures on an ongoing basis. A few examples of this are:
- Tropica collects rainwater from the roof surfaces of the greenhouses and uses it to water the plants.
- Hornbaek uses water-based paint and has very little waste in the process of processing the wood.
- Both Hornbaek and Vahle are FSC® certified. Both companies are also working to become climate-ready production companies.
- The group’s more than 1,000 residential tenancies are equipped with meters for heat and water, so that the residents can follow their consumption online from day to day.
- To promote biodiversity, the group has converted 17,000 m2 of forest into virgin forest, so that the forest area must remain completely untouched in the future.
You can read more about the companies’ initiatives on their respective websites.
In addition to sustainability initiatives, we support a number of organizations that operate both locally, nationally and internationally. What all the organizations have in common is that they help some of the weakest groups in our society and in the world. Read more about our approach to social responsibility.
What are the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals?
In 2015, the UN set 17 concrete goals and 169 sub-goals for sustainable development for both people and the planet, which the 193 member countries are obliged to work with. The goal is to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges and ensure a more sustainable future. Read more about the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
